Canadian Visitor Record

A Canadian Visitor Record is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It allows individuals to stay in Canada longer than the original time authorized at entry. Unlike a visitor visa, which permits entry, a visitor record extends your stay once you are already inside Canada.

What Is a Canadian Visitor Record?

A visitor record is not a visa. It does not permit re-entry into Canada if you leave. Instead, it confirms the date by which you must leave Canada and any conditions attached to your stay. You receive a visitor record either at the port of entry or after applying from within Canada.

Who Needs a Visitor Record?

You need a visitor record if:

  • You want to extend your stay in Canada beyond the original expiry date.

  • You entered as a student or worker and now wish to stay as a visitor.

  • You received no stamp or written date in your passport, and your six-month period is ending.

The visitor record is essential for staying longer in Canada legally. It does not affect your entry status, so if you leave the country, you must have a valid visa or electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to return.

Common Reasons for Needing a Visitor Record

Many people apply for a visitor record for reasons such as:

  • Visiting family for an extended period.

  • Recovering from an illness or injury.

  • Completing personal or family obligations.

  • Transitioning from worker or student status to visitor.

Each case is different. IRCC assesses your reason for extension, your ties to your home country, and whether you have the funds to support yourself.

When Should You Apply?

You should apply for a visitor record at least 30 days before your current status expires. The expiry date may appear on a stamp in your passport, a letter, or an immigration document. If you received no stamp, then you are authorized to stay for up to six months from your entry date.

Applying early helps you avoid status loss. If you apply before your status expires, you can remain in Canada under the same conditions until a decision is made. This is known as “maintained status.”

How to Apply for a Canadian Visitor Record

To apply for a visitor record, follow these steps:

  1. Check your eligibility
Ensure that you are legally in Canada and still within your authorized period of stay.

  2. Gather documents
Prepare your passport, proof of funds, and any documents explaining why you want to extend your stay.

  3. Complete the application
Fill out the form called Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor (IMM 5708).

  4. Pay the fee
The application fee is CAD $100. This fee is non-refundable, even if the application is denied.

  5. Submit online
Apply online through your IRCC secure account. If you cannot apply online, use a paper application.

IRCC may ask for biometric information depending on your country of citizenship and other factors.

After Applying

Once you submit your application, you can stay in Canada until a decision is made, as long as you applied before your current status expired. If your application is approved, you will receive a visitor record by mail or through your online account.

If your application is refused, you must leave Canada by the expiry date of your original status. You may also apply for restoration of status if eligible.

Restoring Your Status

If your visitor status has expired and you did not apply for a visitor record in time, you have 90 days to apply for restoration. You must:

  • Show why you overstayed.

  • Demonstrate that you continue to meet all requirements.

  • Pay the restoration fee in addition to the visitor record fee.

IRCC will assess your case individually. Restoration is not guaranteed.

Traveling with a Visitor Record

A visitor record does not allow you to re-enter Canada. If you travel outside Canada after receiving a visitor record, you must also hold a valid visa or eTA to return. Re-entry is at the discretion of the border services officer.

Always verify that your entry documents are valid before traveling outside Canada.

Maintaining Legal Status

To remain in Canada legally as a visitor:

  • Apply for an extension at least 30 days before your current stay expires.

  • Obey all the conditions listed on your visitor record.

  • Do not overstay your allowed period.

Failing to maintain status may affect your ability to stay in or return to Canada in the future.

Visitor Record vs Visitor Visa

It’s important to understand the difference between a visitor visa and a visitor record:

  • Visitor Visa: A document placed in your passport that lets you enter Canada.

  • Visitor Record: A document issued in Canada that allows you to stay longer but not re-enter if you leave.

You can hold a visitor record and still require a valid visa to return if you exit Canada.

Important Tips

  • Keep a record of when your current stay expires.

  • Monitor your IRCC account for updates and messages.

  • Avoid last-minute applications to reduce the risk of status loss.

  • Maintain valid documents, including your passport, throughout your stay.

By following these guidelines and applying properly, you can continue your stay in Canada without interruptions or legal issues. A visitor record gives you the flexibility to remain in Canada lawfully while complying with all immigration regulations.
